Hi! My name is Joel McIntosh, and I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Motivational Interviewing (MI) trainer. I’ve worked in the social work field since 2008 and have experience across a wide range of physical and behavioral health settings, including primary care, outpatient mental health, substance use treatment and MOUD, HIV care, OB/GYN, and more. In each of these settings, Motivational Interviewing has provided practical conversational tools for navigating meaningful discussions about change.
Real World MI was created to help professionals use Motivational Interviewing in the real conversations they are already having every day. I offer practical, engaging trainings designed to strengthen MI skills in ways that fit your team’s specific setting, workflow, and population. Learning MI will not only improve patient engagement and communication outcomes, but also to help providers feel more confident, natural, and effective when guiding conversations.
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based communication approach designed to help people strengthen motivation and confidence for change, through collaborative engagement.
Most helping professionals eventually learn that simply telling people to change is rarely enough to create lasting change. However, the skills needed to have productive, patient-centered conversations about change do not always come naturally. Motivational Interviewing provides practical, evidence-based tools for guiding these conversations in an effective, respectful, and collaborative way.
MI helps individuals explore their own goals, values, and reasons for change in a supportive, person-centered environment. MI training can improve communication skills, patient engagement, treatment outcomes, and behavior change conversations across healthcare, behavioral health, education, coaching, and other helping professions.

“MI is a way of being with a client, not just a set of techniques for doing counseling”
William Miller & Stephen Rollnick
